December 2009
In my tiny terraced house in Cambridge I have tried to bring in as much light as possible, with roof lights in the kitchen and bathroom and the use of plenty of white on walls and woodwork. At the same time I have given it life with splashes of soft colour.
Scandinavian design has been a huge influence, with its emphasis on pale walls and floors and simple window treatments. The Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi, where things faded, distressed, scratched and worn are seen to have a beauty of their own, is becoming more and more absorbing.
Many of the pieces of furniture, mirrors, lamps and fabrics and sales, have been picked up over the years in junk shops or from Eammaus, my local charity warehouse.
